It's alive and kickin'

In six days the ball rolls at the 2026 World Cup — and nobody’s quite in the mood. 48 teams, 104 matches, kickoff somewhere between clocking-off and dawn, and an atmosphere that’s already half asleep. Good thing something else woke up tonight.

1985, Simple Minds: a synth loop, Jim Kerr roaring into the mic that something’s alive and kicking. Seven times I built this thing, and seven times it lay still afterwards. But some roads you only reach by crossing a few bridges.

Tonight, on the eighth attempt, it opened its eyes.

It’s alive. And it’s kicking. About time.

Against the half-asleep prediction game

You know the other prediction game. The one where it’s all decided by halfway through and half the players have stopped tipping. Bettles is the opposite. Bettles is different. Not dozed off like Kicktipp.

You play in your club against your people — not against a bookmaker who wins in the end anyway. Real odds, passed straight through from real providers, unchanged. And for every prediction you decide how many coins to put behind it: cautious when you’re unsure, all in when you’re certain. The whole stake stays in the club. Nobody here takes a cut.

Your club, your rules, your odds. The pot stays on the table — not with the bookmaker.

Right on time for kickoff

That Bettles comes alive right now is no accident. This World Cup can use all the help it can get to stay awake.

That’s exactly what Bettle One is for: the free, public World Cup prediction game on Bettles. 1,000 spots, all 104 matches, not a cent to enter. And real cash on top: €500 for first place, €250 for second, €100 for third. When someone kicks off at two in the morning somewhere in Detroit, the difference between “interesting” and “whatever” is one simple question: have you got something riding on it, or not?

You do. Promise.

How this actually came to be — on my own, with a few too many all-nighters — I’ll tell another time. In the engine room, soon. Keep your eyes open.

It’s alive. And it’s kicking the ball. With proper gusto.
